چکیده

This paper characterizes four measurement algorithms for flow enforcement in ATM networks. The algorithms are the leaky bucket, the rectangular sliding window, the triangular sliding window, and the exponentially weighted moving average. A comparison, based partly on teletrafflc theory and partly on signal processing theory, is carried out. It is suggested to use the RMS measurement bandwidth to dimension linear algorithms for equal flow enforcement characteristics. Implementations are proposed on the block diagram level, and dimensioning examples are carried out when flow enforcing a renewaltype Connection using the four algorithms. The corresponding hardware demands are estimated and compared.

Intrusion detection considerations for switched networks

Many private and public networks are based on network switching technologies. However, switched networks present a number of challenges to intrusion detection equipment. These challenges include limited visibility of network flows at the edges of the network, high-speed packet processing, and highly-aggregated flows in the core. In addition, switched networks typically implement protocols speci...

Performance Analysis on Path Rerouting Algorithms for Handoff Control in Mobile ATM Networks

This paper studies mobile-generated traffic distributions in mobile ATM networks and evaluates the performance of path rerouting algorithms for handoff control. In mobile ATM networks, user mobility and handoff path rerouting may produce extra traffic load over network links, requiring larger network capacity to support the same QoS. In this paper, we propose a flow model for mobile ATM network...

Control engineer's look at ATM congestion avoidance

Algorithms for controlling congestion are critical for the success of ATM networks. The various sample algorithms appearing in the literature have in common significant nonlinearities that make these algorithms difficult to analyze using the tools of classical control theory. This paper reports on the beginnings of a research program that considers the ATM congestion control problem from the po...

Experimental Evaluation of ATM Congestion Control Mechanisms

Tt is widely believed that closed-loop per-VC flow control is needed to effectively deal with congestion for ABR traffic in ATM networks. The many ATM flow control mechanisms that have been proposed can be divided in two classes. A first class consists of roundtrip-based rate control algorithms in which a source selects a transmit rate for each VC, based on feedback from the switches along its ...

M1, M2, ..., Mk/G1, G2,..., Gk/l/N Queue with Buffer Division and Push-Out Schemes for ATM Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper, loss probabilities and steady state probabilities of data packets for an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network are investigated under the buffer division and push-out schemes. Data packets are classified in classes k which arrive in Poisson fashion to the service facility and are served with general service rate under buffer division scheme, finite buffer space N is divided in...
